Chapter 2: The Name He Never Thought to Ask

Nathan stared at his phone.
Unknown number.
He ignored it.
It rang again immediately.
Then his business partner called.
Then his lawyer.
Then three numbers he didn't recognize, back to back, without stopping.
His face changed.
"What did you do?" he said, turning to me.
I hadn't moved from the floor.
My back was still burning.
But I kept my eyes on him.
"I told you," I said quietly.
"I called my father."
Madison stepped forward.
"Nathan, she's bluffing.
She's nobody.
Her father is some retired nobody from Georgia."
Nathan's lawyer was still on the line.
I could hear the voice from across the room.
Nathan went pale.
"What do you mean the accounts are frozen?"
Madison's smile flickered for the first time.
Nathan looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time in three years.
"Who is your father, Sophia?"
I reached for the folder he had thrown at me.
I placed it back on the table without opening it.
"You should have asked that question before the wedding," I said.
His phone rang again.
This time it was his bank.
And then the front door opened.
Three men in dark suits walked in without knocking.
The one in front looked directly at Nathan and said six words.
"Mr.
Brooks.
Come with us now."
Nathan's face went white as paper.
Madison grabbed his arm.
"Nathan — what is happening?"
He didn't answer her.
He was staring at the emblem on the lead man's jacket.
And suddenly, he understood exactly who my father was.
