Chapter 2: The Name on the Title

Part 2 ⬇️
I stared at that name for a long time.
Abigail.
I had never heard Douglas mention anyone by that name.
Not once in twenty-nine years.
I typed back: *Who are you?*
Three dots appeared.
Then stopped.
Then appeared again.
Finally: *Someone who made the same mistake you did.
I trusted him too.*
My hand went still on the phone.
Before I could reply, a second message came through.
*Check the business account he asked you to refinance last spring.
Look at where the money actually went.
It wasn't equipment, Gwen.
It was never equipment.*
I pulled up the bank records on my laptop.
My login still worked — Douglas had never bothered to remove my access.
The refinance transfer.
Forty-two thousand dollars.
It hadn't gone to any supplier.
It had gone to a private address I didn't recognise.
I searched the address.
A property listing came up.
A two-bedroom apartment.
Purchased fourteen months ago.
The buyer's name on the record wasn't Douglas.
It was listed under a woman's name.
And underneath the purchase record was something that made the room feel like it was tilting around me.
A second name on the title.
A child's name.
Age listed in the property notes as three years old.
My phone rang.
Unknown number again.
I answered without speaking.
"Gwen," the woman said quietly.
"The illness isn't real.
But the child is."
