Chapter 2: Don't Make This Harder

Tyler didn't say my name.
He didn't say Mason's name either.
He said hers.
I sat completely still.
Around me, a few passengers were smiling, looking around the cabin.
Someone near the front actually started clapping.
Mason tugged my sleeve.
"Mom.
Who's Sophie?"
I couldn't answer him.
My throat had closed.
Tyler's voice continued over the speakers, warm and steady — the same voice that tells me he loves me every single morning.
"Sophie, I know you're on this flight.
I've been waiting for the right moment.
And I think this is it."
The woman two rows ahead of us stood up slowly.
She was young.
Polished.
Confident in a way that made my stomach drop.
She pressed one hand to her mouth.
Her eyes were wet.
The passengers around her cheered.
Mason looked at me.
Then at her.
Then back at me.
"Dad knows that lady?"
I put my arm around him and said nothing.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text from Tyler's number.
Four words.
*Don't make this harder.*
My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped the phone.
Because that text wasn't sent just now.
It had been sitting in my inbox since Thursday.
I had never seen it before.
Someone had deleted it.
And then it came back.
---
What Tyler did next — and what was on that phone — left me unable to breathe.
