Chapter 2: Four Words

Part 2 ⬇️
Ellen Mercer didn't sit back down.
She walked toward me slowly, her eyes moving between me and Grant with the careful expression of someone recalculating everything she thought she knew about this room.
"Mrs.
Waverly," she said.
"Are you telling us the expansion agreement cannot proceed as currently structured?"
"That's exactly what I'm telling you."
Grant moved fast.
"Ellen, Claire is eight months pregnant and she's had a difficult evening.
Give us twenty minutes and I'll explain everything."
Ellen looked at him.
"Can you sign the agreement without her?"
The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had ever heard.
Grant's jaw tightened.
"That's a technicality."
"It's not a technicality," Malcolm said from across the room.
"If Article Twelve requires Claire's signature as founding partner, then nothing moves without her."
I watched Grant's face change color.
For seven years he had introduced me as his wife first and his business partner second.
He had let people assume the company was his vision and I was the support.
He had smiled while board members directed their questions to him.
He had never corrected them.
And now every person in that ballroom was looking at him and finally understanding why.
Sabrina touched his arm.
He didn't move.
Then my phone buzzed on the table behind me.
I glanced at the screen.
It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.
Four words.
*I have the emails.*
