Chapter 2: She Never Is

PART 2

I didn't touch a single dish.

Instead, I sat down at the kitchen table, opened my laptop, and got to work doing what I do every single day at my job.

I started building an invoice.

Line by line.

Hour by hour.

Service by service.

Professional housekeeping — $45 per hour.

Personal chef services for six people — $65 per hour.

Grocery procurement and errand running — $30 per hour.

Laundry and linen services — $25 per load.

Two weeks.

Every day.

Full rate.

By the time I finished the first draft, the total came to $4,840.

Then I found something that made my hands go still.

Carson's email was still open on the shared tablet we used for travel bookings.

I wasn't snooping.

The screen was just sitting there, lit up on the kitchen counter.

The subject line read: *"Re: Cape May — Brenda won't be a problem."*

It was from Garrett.

Sent four months ago.

Carson's reply was three words long.

*"She never is."*

I read it twice.

Then I forwarded it directly to myself, closed the tablet, and set it back exactly where it had been.

When I heard Garrett's SUV pull into the driveway just after six, I was seated calmly at the table.

The house was exactly as they had left it.

Nothing cooked.

Nothing cleaned.

And a printed document sitting in the center of the table, face down.

Carson pushed open the door, laughing at something Garrett had said.

Then he saw my face.

His smile disappeared.

"Brenda…

what is this?"

---

What Brenda said next stopped everyone cold — and Carson had no answer for it.
