Chapter 2: The Men at the Gate
The door didn't open.
Adrian's security chief looked at him.
"Sir…
what do you want us to do?"
Adrian straightened his jacket.
"They're not coming in.
This is my house."
From outside, my brother's voice came again.
Quieter this time.
That was worse.
"Adrian.
I won't ask again."
Adrian laughed — the same laugh from thirty minutes ago.
Hollow.
Performed.
"Who does he think he is?"
I answered from where I still hung, wrists bound above my head.
"His name is Daniel Marsh.
You may have seen his name on the Cole Industries acquisition documents from 2019.
The ones your lawyers couldn't get the other party to budge on."
Adrian went very still.
"That was your brother?"
"That was my oldest brother.
The other four are standing behind him."
Vanessa set her wine glass down slowly.
Adrian's father took one step toward me, then stopped.
"Cut her down," someone in the crowd said.
Then another voice.
Then three more.
Adrian raised one hand.
"Nobody moves."
But his security chief was already on his phone again.
When he turned around, his expression had changed completely.
"Mr.
Cole.
The men outside…
two of them have federal identification."
The room went silent.
Adrian looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time.
"Evelyn.
What did you do?"
I held his gaze.
"I told you.
I listened to my brothers."
