Chapter 2: The Door She Walked Back Through

I walked back into that ballroom like I owned it.

Because I did.

Damian was already at the podium, laughing with his investors, Chloe's hand on his arm.

He didn't even notice me at first.

Then the main doors opened.

Four men in dark suits entered.

Behind them, two attorneys carrying briefcases.

And behind them — my father, Richard Sterling, in a charcoal jacket, calm as a man who had never once lost anything in his life.

The room shifted.

Damian turned.

His smile didn't disappear all at once.

It faded, piece by piece, like he was trying to understand something his brain refused to process.

"Alyssa…

who are these people?"

"The hotel's legal owners," I said.

"And your majority shareholders."

Chloe laughed — nervous now, not cruel.

"That's not possible.

Damian built this company from nothing."

My father's attorney opened his briefcase and placed a document on the table between us.

"Crawford Technologies was seeded through the Sterling Family Trust in 2019.

Miss Sterling holds sixty-eight percent of all voting shares.

Mr.

Crawford holds nineteen."

Damian's face went white.

"You knew," he whispered.

"This whole time, you knew."

"You humiliated me in front of three hundred people, Damian." I picked up the divorce papers he had thrown at my feet.

"But you forgot to read what you actually signed."

His attorney grabbed the folder.

I watched his expression change as he reached the final page.

"Damian—" he started.

"What?" Damian snatched the papers.

And then he saw it.
