Chapter 2: The Man Who Made the Call

Richard grabbed my arm the moment we stepped into the corridor.
"What did you mean by that?" His voice was low.
Controlled.
But his grip wasn't.
I looked down at his hand.
He let go.
"You're embarrassing yourself," he said.
"In there, just now — that little performance.
What was that?"
"I didn't perform anything, Richard."
"You made me look like a fool in front of people I've worked with for fifteen years."
I almost laughed.
"You did that yourself.
I just didn't look away."
He stepped closer.
"I don't know what you think you're doing, but you need to be very careful."
I held his gaze.
"So do you."
That was when Daniel appeared at the end of the corridor.
He looked at Richard first.
Then at me.
Something shifted in his expression — not surprise exactly.
More like a man who had just realized he was standing too close to something about to collapse.
"Rich," he said quietly.
"They're asking for you inside."
Richard straightened.
Smoothed his jacket.
The familiar confidence returned to his face like a mask being lifted back into place.
He walked past me without another word.
But Daniel didn't follow him immediately.
He stopped beside me.
Kept his voice low.
"How long have you known?"
I looked at him.
"Long enough."
He nodded slowly.
Then he walked away.
And I understood something in that moment that Richard still didn't.
Daniel Cross wasn't Richard's closest ally.
He was the one who had made the call to my firm.
