Chapter 2: The Question She Wasn't Ready For

PART 2 ⬇️

Christopher was still laughing when Jacqueline quietly closed her briefcase.

Sabrina watched me from across the table, searching my face for something to mock.

When she found nothing, her smile flickered.

"You're not even going to cry?" she asked.

"No," I said.

She leaned closer.

"Eight years, Stephanie.

Eight years and you couldn't give him one child.

I gave him two in twelve months.

You should be thanking me for ending something that was already over."

I looked at her for a long moment.

"How long?" I asked quietly.

She blinked.

"How long what?"

"How long before you told him I was the problem?"

Her jaw tightened.

That was answer enough.

My mother finally spoke from her chair near the fireplace.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Sabrina.

What did you do?"

Sabrina straightened.

"I gave this family a future.

Someone had to."

That was when Penelope made a sound I had never heard from her before.

Not crying.

Something closer to a person realizing, too late, that the wall they built to protect one secret had just collapsed onto everything else.

She looked at me.

Then at the briefcase.

Then back at me.

"The results," she whispered.

"When will they—"

My phone lit up on the table.

I turned it face-down without answering.

"Soon," I said.
