Chapter 2: The Secondary Account

I stood there with bl00d still drying at my temple, and Grant laughed.
Not a nervous laugh.
A slow, satisfied one.
"You always thought you were the smart one," he said.
"That's what made this so easy."
His mother set down her wine glass without a sound.
She didn't look surprised.
She looked relieved.
That was when I understood.
This wasn't Grant's plan.
It was hers.
I looked at her.
"You knew about the transfer."
She smiled the same smile she'd given me at our wedding.
"I've known about everything, dear.
From the beginning."
My phone buzzed.
A message from my private attorney — the one Grant didn't know about.
*The secondary account.
Check the secondary account.*
My hands were shaking, but I opened the app.
The number I saw didn't make sense.
It was larger than $63.4 million.
Much larger.
Grant stepped toward me.
"Whatever you think you found, it's too late.
The paperwork was signed this morning.
Everything transfers at midnight."
I looked up at him.

"Then we have a few hours," I said.
His smile flickered for the first time all evening.
