Chapter 2: Someone in That Room Knew

Part 2 ⬇️
Nobody moved.
The legal officer was still on the line.
I could hear him breathing.
"There's something else," he said.
"The transfer wasn't authorized through the company.
It went through a private account.
One registered before your marriage."
Grant hadn't moved from his chair.
His mother reached over and touched his hand.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like she already knew.
"You planned this before we were even married," I said.
He didn't deny it.
"You were never supposed to find out this fast."
His father stood up from the end of the table.
"Grant.
Enough."
But Grant just leaned back.
"She can't prove anything.
Not in time."
I looked at his father.
Something in his face was wrong.
Not anger.
Not shame.
Fear.
"Why are you afraid of me?" I asked him.
He looked away.
And then my phone buzzed again.
A message.
No name.
Just four words.
*Check the original deed.*
I didn't recognize the number.
But someone in that room did.
Because when I looked up, Grant's mother had gone completely still — and her eyes were fixed on her husband.
Not on me.

What's in that deed — and who just sent that message?
