Ryan's face went white when he saw me point at the camera.
He stopped banging on the door.
For a long moment, he just stood there on the porch, staring through the glass at me.
Then his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Anger.
"You planned this," he said through the door.
"You set me up."
"I came home early to surprise my daughter on her birthday, Ryan."
He had nothing to say to that.
Sophie was still shaking in my arms.
I carried her to the couch and pulled a blanket around her.
Her cheek was red where his hand had landed.
I took a photo of it.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*This isn't the first time.
Ask him about the account in Sophie's name.*
I read it twice.
Sophie's name.
I looked up at Ryan still standing outside.
He was watching my face through the glass — and when he saw my expression change, something shifted in his eyes.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not about the camera.
Not about the police.
About whatever that message just told me.
"Who sent this?" I said, holding the phone up to the glass.
He took one step back.
