Chapter 2: The Man at the Door

Part 2 ⬇️

David's laugh died the moment his own phone buzzed.

He looked down at the screen.

Then looked up at me standing in the office doorway.

The color drained from his face.

"What did you do?" he said.

I didn't answer.

One of the executives — a man named Gerald who had laughed the loudest — was already backing toward the front door, jacket in hand.

"David, I think we should go," Gerald muttered.

"Nobody is going anywhere," I said quietly.

That stopped him cold.

David crossed the room in three steps and grabbed my arm.

"You don't own anything.

You're my wife.

Whatever you think you pulled tonight, I will undo it by morning."

I looked down at his hand on my arm, then back at his face.

"Let go," I said.

"There are four cameras in this room.

And you've already used up your last warning."

He released me.

His phone buzzed again.

Then again.

The executives were checking theirs too.

Someone whispered a number — a dollar figure — and the room went tight with panic.

David's jaw worked but nothing came out.

Then the front door opened.

Neither of us had unlocked it.

A man in a dark suit stepped inside and looked directly at David.

"Mr.

Hargrove.

We need to talk about the house."
