Chapter 2: Hello, Danny. Miss Me?

I stood frozen, staring at those two letters on the screen.
V.V.
Victoria Vance.
The woman Daniel had described with tears in his eyes on our second date.
The woman whose framed photograph Patricia kept on the mantelpiece "to honor her memory." The woman whose supposed grave I had once placed flowers on because Daniel asked me to.
My hands stopped shaking.
Something colder replaced the fear.
I scrolled up through the message thread.
There were dozens of them, going back eighteen months.
Coordinates.
Account numbers.
One message that made my stomach drop completely:
*"Once the trust transfers, Emily becomes the problem.
You know what to do."*
Daniel's reply was a single word.
*"Understood."*
Outside the door, I heard Patricia's voice crack.
"Daniel, the house account is frozen too.
Everything is frozen.
What did she DO?"
Then a voice I didn't recognize — low, a woman's voice, coming from somewhere near the front of the house — said clearly:
"She didn't do anything yet.
I did."
The pounding on the study door stopped completely.
Daniel whispered something I couldn't hear.
Then that same voice said four words that turned the entire night upside down.
"Hello, Danny.
Miss me?"
