Chapter 2: Something He Was Certain No One Would Find

Judge Blackwood set the letter down slowly.
He removed his glasses, cleaned them, and put them back on — as if he needed to be absolutely certain of what he had just read.
"Mr.
Sterling," he said, his voice calm but carrying something sharp underneath.
"Is it true that the business account ending in 7741 was opened jointly during your marriage?"
Garrick shifted in his seat.
"That account is mine.
My name is on it."
"Both names are on it," Judge Blackwood said flatly.
Delphine leaned toward Garrick and whispered something.
Cordelia's hand gripped the edge of the bench.
Marlowe still didn't move.
Then the judge looked up from the letter and asked one quiet question that made the entire room go still.
"Mr.
Sterling — who signed the property transfer dated March 4th?"
Garrick's lawyer stood immediately.
"Your Honor, that document was—"
"Sit down," Judge Blackwood said.
"I'm asking your client."
Garrick's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Cordelia turned to look at her son.
For the first time, her expression wasn't cold.
It was afraid.
Because Marlowe hadn't just written a letter.
She had enclosed something with it.
Something Garrick had been certain no one would ever find.
