Chapter 2: The Envelope Behind the Insurance Papers

I called my own lawyer that same afternoon.
He went quiet for a long moment after I explained.
"Laura…
did Michael ever mention changing the deed?"
My stomach dropped.
"No.
Never."
Another pause.
"I need you to come in tomorrow.
Bring every document you have on the property."
That night I couldn't sleep.
I went through every drawer, every file box Michael kept in the closet.
That's when I found it — an envelope tucked behind his old insurance papers.
My name was written on the front in Michael's handwriting.
Inside was a letter.
And a second document I didn't recognize.
I read the first line three times before it made sense.
Before I could finish reading, my phone rang.
It was Rhonda.
"I hope you slept well," she said.
"Because tomorrow, that house belongs to us."
I looked down at the papers in my shaking hand.
"Rhonda," I said slowly.
"Did you know Michael left me a letter?"
The line went completely silent.
