Chapter 2: The Key He Already Had

It was a box.

A small, flat wooden box — the kind you'd keep letters or photographs in.

Old.

Worn at the corners.

And locked.

My hands were shaking as I carried it to the kitchen table.

I just sat there staring at it, trying to make sense of why Jacqueline would hide something like this under a mattress in my home for six months without saying a single word.

I called Zachary in from the other room.

He took one look at it and went completely still.

"Where did you find that?" His voice came out strange.

Quiet in a way that didn't feel calm.

"Under the mattress," I said.

"You recognize it, don't you."

It wasn't a question.

I could see it on his face.

He sat down slowly.

He didn't touch the box.

He just looked at it like it was something he'd hoped he would never have to see again.

"Zachary." My voice was steady but my chest was tight.

"What is in that box?"

He was quiet for a long moment.

Then he said, "I don't know if you're ready for this."

"Try me."

He reached into his pocket, and I realized — he already had the key.
