Chapter 1: The Dress That Shouldn't Exist

My husband's mother laughed at my $30 thrift-store dress at his retirement party — then his boss asked her one question.

After thirty-two years at the same company, my husband, Michael, was finally retiring.

His company threw him a beautiful dinner at a downtown hotel.

Nearly eighty people came.

I couldn't afford anything fancy, so I found a dark blue vintage dress at a thrift store for $30.

Michael loved it.

His mother, Carol, didn't.

The second she saw me, she laughed.

"You wore that to Michael's retirement party?"

She even checked the label inside my collar.

"Thirty years of marriage and he still can't buy you a decent dress?"

Several people heard her.

I wanted to disappear.

Michael was about to respond when his boss, Mr.

Harrison, stepped over.

He was seventy-four and had founded the company decades earlier.

He stared at my dress.

Not at me.

At the dress.

Then he glanced at Carol.

His smile vanished.

"Where did she get that?"

Carol shrugged.

"Some thrift store.

Why?"

Mr.

Harrison moved closer and touched the tiny silver button on my sleeve.

Then he asked Carol one question.

Carol's wineglass slipped from her hand.

Crash.

The entire table went silent.

Michael stood up.

His mother grabbed my arm.

"Take that dress off."

"What?"

"Now."

What did Mr.

May you like

Harrison ask — and why did it make Carol drop her glass?
