Chapter 2: One Check Each

While they laughed and clinked their glasses, I slipped away from the table for a few minutes.

I found our waiter near the kitchen.

"I need to split this check," I told him quietly.

"Separate bills.

One for each couple or individual.

Can you do that?"

He looked surprised, but nodded.

"Of course."

I handed him a list I had written out on a napkin — who ordered what, who was sitting where.

I had been keeping track all evening.

When I returned to the table, no one even noticed I had been gone.

My sister-in-law was already on her third glass of wine, laughing loudly about a vacation she was planning.

My father-in-law was cutting into a steak that cost more than my first week's groceries when I was in college.

Chris caught my eye from across the table.

I smiled at him.

He smiled back, relaxed, unsuspecting.

Then the waiter came.

But instead of one bill sliding toward me, he began placing separate checks in front of each person around the table.

The laughter stopped.

My sister-in-law looked down at the number in front of her and went completely pale.

"Wait — what is this?"

Chris stared at his check.

Then he looked at me.

And the expression on his face was something I had never seen before.
