Chapter 2: What He Found on the Floor

His hands were shaking when he opened it.

I could hear the paper unfolding through the phone.

Then silence.

"Madison." His voice had changed.

"What is this?"

"You can read."

"These are divorce papers."

"Yes."

"You had these prepared before I even left?"

I looked down at our son, still asleep, his tiny chest rising and falling.

"I had them prepared three weeks ago.

The morning you told me due dates were estimates."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"You planned this."

"You told me I was on my own.

I believed you."

Then I heard a second voice in the background.

Denise.

She had gone inside with him.

"Ethan, who is she calling about?

What papers?"

He didn't answer her.

"Madison, we need to talk about this in person."

"There's a second envelope behind the first one," I said.

"Look at it."

I heard him reach back into the folder.

I heard the moment he stopped breathing.

Because the second envelope wasn't from my lawyer.

It was from his.

And it had already been opened.

Someone had gotten there before him.

"Where did you get this?" he whispered.

I didn't answer.

In the background, Denise had gone very quiet too.

And that told me everything I needed to know about what was inside.

What was in that second envelope — and why did Denise go silent the moment Ethan found it?
