Chapter 2: The Envelope in the Stroller Bag

Part 2 ⬇️

Daniel's smile faltered when he saw mine.

"Why are you smiling?" he said.

"Helen.

Why are you smiling like that?"

I didn't answer.

I just reached into the stroller bag — slowly, calmly — and pulled out a manila envelope.

His face changed.

"What is that?"

"You wanted me to sign the house over," I said.

"I already had paperwork prepared.

Funny coincidence, isn't it?"

The woman in the white blouse loosened her grip on his arm.

"Daniel," she said quietly.

"What is she talking about?"

He ignored her.

His eyes were locked on the envelope.

"You had no idea I knew," I said.

"Did you?"

"How—" He stopped.

Swallowed.

"How long have you known?"

I tilted my head toward our three daughters in the stroller.

The tiniest one was asleep.

The other two were watching him with wide, dark eyes — his eyes, in three tiny faces he had never once held.

"Long enough," I said.

"Long enough to make sure everything is already in my name."

The woman took one step back.

"Daniel." Her voice was different now.

Sharper.

"You told me the house was yours."

He spun toward her.

"It is—"

"It isn't," I said simply.

And that was when his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

All the color left his face.
