Chapter 2: The Photograph That Stopped Everything

My father did not speak to Nathan right away.
He walked toward me first.
He removed his coat without a word and placed it gently across my shoulders.
Then he turned.
"Mr.
Ashford." His voice was calm.
Almost quiet.
"I have been watching you for three years."
Nathan's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"Every transfer.
Every shell company.
Every account registered under her name without her knowledge." My father paused.
"You were very careful.
But not careful enough."
Celeste moved toward the door.
One of the federal agents stepped in front of her without being asked.
She stopped.
Nathan finally found his voice.
"You have no authority here.
This is private property.
Whatever you think you haveβ"
"We have everything," my father said simply.
He reached into his jacket and placed a single photograph on the table between them.
Nathan looked down.
His face changed.
It was a photograph I had never seen before.
I did not know what it showed.
But Nathan's hands began to shake.
"Where did you get that?" he whispered.
My father did not answer.
He looked at me instead.
"Can you stand?"
"Yes," I said.
"Then let's go home."
Nathan grabbed the edge of the table.
"Wait.
*Wait.* That photograph β if that goes public, it's not just meβ"
"I know," my father said.
He was already walking toward the door.
---
What was in that photograph β and why did it terrify Nathan more than the federal agents?
The truth is darker than anything in Part 1.
