Chapter 2: By Morning, Everything Had Changed

— PART 2 —
I checked into a hotel two miles away and didn't sleep.
Not because I was upset.
Because I was working.
By midnight, I had spoken to my attorney.
By 2 a.m., the documents were ready.
By 6 a.m., I was dressed, calm, and driving back.
I didn't knock.
I used my key.
Diane was already in the kitchen in her robe, helping herself to my coffee.
She looked up and her expression said everything — she had expected me to come back smaller.
Quieter.
Ready to apologize.
"You're back early," she said.
"I live here," I said.
Eric appeared at the top of the stairs, still half asleep.
"What's going on?"
I set a folder on the kitchen counter.
"This house is held in a private trust.
My name only.
Eric was never on the deed."
Diane laughed.
"That's not possible."
"You're welcome to read it."
The laugh faded.
Eric came downstairs slowly.
He picked up the first page.
I watched the color leave his face.
"You can't do this," he said.
"I didn't do anything this morning," I said.
"I did it six months ago."
"Why?"
I looked at him for a long moment.
"Because of what I found in the joint account.
You know exactly what I'm talking about, Eric."
He went very still.
And that was when Kyle walked in from the garage — and behind him was someone none of us expected to see standing in my doorway.
