Chapter 1: The Morning He Left Everything Behind

My husband moved his elderly parents into my house and casually told me, "Take care of them while I'm gone." He wasn't leaving on a business trip.

He was flying overseas to spend four years with his mistress.

I smiled, kissed him goodbye, and waved until he disappeared through airport security.

The moment he was out of sight, I canceled all six of his black cards, filed for divorce, and made sure there would be absolutely nothing waiting for him when he finally came home.

My husband moved his elderly parents into my home and expected me to care for them while he was away.

He claimed he was leaving for work, but the truth was he was disappearing overseas with his mistress for four years.

What he never imagined was that the only thing waiting for him when he returned...

would be complete devastation.

"London?

For four years?"

The silver fork slipped from my fingers and clattered against the porcelain plate with a sharp metallic sound.

Everett reached across the table, covering my hand with his.

He wore that familiar apologetic smile, the same one that had persuaded me to let countless arguments go.

"Four years will pass before you know it, Stella," he said softly.

"I'm doing this for our future."

Before I had a chance to respond, my mother-in-law, Shirley, sl@pped her palm against the table.

"Well, thank goodness!" she exclaimed.

"Our son is finally getting the opportunity he deserves."

Then she turned toward me with her usual air of superiority.

"And while Everett is away, your father-in-law and I will be moving in here.

You won't have to be alone, and you'll finally get the chance to be the daughter-in-law you were supposed to be."

Nobody asked what I wanted.

They had already decided that I would spend the next 1,460 days trapped inside my own house with a woman who criticized everything I did.

It wasn't a discussion.

It was a sentence.

I lowered my eyes toward my plate.

Suddenly, every bite tasted like ash.

"Fine," I said quietly.

"I accept."

The following morning, I drove Everett to the airport.

He held me tightly, promised we'd FaceTime every single day, then disappeared through the security checkpoint with his carry-on suitcase.

I walked back to my car, trying to convince myself I could survive the next four years.

Then my phone buzzed.

A banking notification.

The moment I read it, my entire body went still.

Transaction Alert: -$15,000.00.

Merchant: Lumina Jewelers, Peachtree Street, Atlanta.

I stared at the screen.

Then read it again.

And again.

Fifteen thousand dollars.

At one of Atlanta's most exclusive jewelry stores.

Everett's flight should have been boarding by now.

He was supposed to be waiting at the gate for London.

Instead...

He was still in Atlanta.

Buying diamonds for another woman with money we had spent years building together.

The panic vanished almost instantly.

In its place came something far colder.

Perfect clarity.

I pulled onto the shoulder of the highway, picked up my phone, and called our private banking representative.

"Premium Banking Services.

How may I help you today?"

"My name is Stella Norris," I said, my voice calm enough to send chills down my own spine.

"I'm the primary account holder, and I need to report major fraudulent activity."

"Yes, Mrs.

Norris.

What would you like us to do?"

"Freeze every card connected to our accounts."

I paused.

"The platinum cards."

"The black cards."

"All of them."

"Immediately."

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white.

Everett believed he had planned the perfect escape.

He thought he could spend our money on another woman while leaving his parents behind for me to care for.

He had absolutely no idea what was about to happen next...

---

What will Everett find waiting for him when those cards stop working?
