Chapter 7: The Last Lie He Told

My fingers would not touch the envelope.

Grace pulled on a pair of gloves and opened it.

“This is a mail-in test,” she said.

“There is no verified chain of custody.”

Daniel stood by the door.

“The result is still clear.”

“You supplied the samples,” Grace replied.

“Who did they come from?”

“Lily and me.”

Chloe moved her baby against her shoulder.

“When did you take Lily’s sample?”

“Jennifer was asleep.”

“No,” I said.

“Lily slept beside me for her first six weeks.”

Daniel looked at Chloe’s child, and Chloe’s face changed.

“You used my baby’s sample.”

“That’s absurd.”

“You asked to hold him two weeks ago.

You rubbed a swab inside his mouth and said it was for a newborn health kit.”

Everyone became still.

Grace held up the report.

“The child tested here is male.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

I stepped toward him.

“Lily is a girl.”

He reached for the document, but Grace moved it behind her.

“It was a filing error,” he said.

“No,” Chloe replied.

“It was another plan.

If custody failed, you were going to pretend Lily wasn’t yours.”

Daniel pointed at her.

“You have no idea who fathered your child.”

Chloe’s eyes filled, but she did not look away.

“My former husband requested a court test during our divorce.

My baby is his.

You knew the result last week.”

Robert opened the conference-room door.

“Leave, Daniel.”

“You believe them over your own son?”

“I believe documents you cannot explain.”

Daniel looked at me one last time.

“You will come back when the bills arrive and you realize what life costs without me.”

“I paid for Lily’s birth while you paid for another home,” I said.

“I already know what life costs without you.”

Two months later, I sat beside Grace in court while Daniel entered his plea concerning the forged loan application and the diverted client funds.

He avoided my eyes until the judge asked if he wished to speak.

Daniel turned toward me.

“I made mistakes because my marriage was failing.”

I stood when the judge permitted me to answer.

“Our marriage did not forge my name.

Our marriage did not take a notary seal.

You did.”

The judge ordered him to repay the forty thousand dollars taken from the client account and the fifteen thousand removed from our savings.

The attempted home-equity transfer was permanently canceled.

“You will serve twelve months under home confinement,” the judge said, “followed by three years of supervised probation.

You are also prohibited from working in any position involving client funds during that period.”

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

“What about my daughter?”

“Family court will determine future access.

The existing supervised-visitation order remains.”

In the family courtroom that afternoon, a verified test confirmed Daniel was Lily’s father.

The judge awarded me primary physical custody and required Daniel to complete parenting classes and counseling before requesting expanded visits.

Daniel signed the final page.

“You’ve made sure Lily will grow up without a father.”

I placed my pen beside his.

“No.

You made sure she would grow up knowing that love does not require surrender.”

He stood with the court officer beside him.

“One day she’ll ask about me.”

“And I’ll tell her the truth in words she is old enough to understand.”

Daniel paused at the door.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

“No,” I said.

“I only stopped believing you were better than me.”

The door closed behind him.

In the hallway, Evelyn waited with a small bag of Lily’s clothes.

She held it against her chest but did not approach.

“There is something I need to say,” she whispered.

“And this time, I won’t ask you to make it easy for me.”
