Chapter 1: The Birthday He Will Never Forget

My husband made me cook for 30 guests at his birthday party while I had a broken leg — but his mother made him regret it.
Three weeks ago, I broke my leg.
The doctor told me to rest as much as possible so it could heal properly.
But my husband, Donald, apparently didn't hear that part.
One evening, Donald came up to me and said:
"My birthday is coming up, and I'm turning 40.
Honey, I'm counting on you.
I've already invited thirty guests.
We're having a pool party, so I'll need appetizers, main dishes, and don't forget the cocktails!"
I was a little shocked.
I glanced down at my cast, then looked at Donald and said:
"But my leg is broken.
I thought we'd just have a small family celebration at home and order food.
I can't stand around and prepare a whole buffet for 30 guests."
He burst out laughing and said:
"You're not going to die if you sit in a chair and cook at the table, are you?
I want an amazing party, not some boring little family dinner!
It's not like I turn 40 every day!"
I tried to explain to Donald that preparing that much food would be extremely difficult for me and that if he really wanted a big party, he should order catering.
He just shrugged and said:
"Catering is expensive!
Do you have any idea how much prepared food we'd have to order for 30 people?
You need to prepare the buffet for my birthday."
On the morning of his birthday, I got up at 4:00 a.m.
to start cooking.
I kept sitting down to rest, then getting back up, balancing on one crutch while stirring food with my free hand.
I made appetizers, hot dishes, desserts, and all kinds of drinks.
I cooked nonstop for hours and couldn't even join the guests while Donald swam in the pool and enjoyed his party.
Then Donald's mother stepped into the kitchen.
She had just arrived for her son's birthday celebration.
She asked why I was even in the kitchen when I was supposed to be resting.
I told her Donald had asked me to make all the food for his party because catering was too expensive for him.
Without saying another word, she walked out of the kitchen.
About ten minutes later, I heard Donald shouting from the pool area.
I went outside on my crutches.
All the guests were standing there in complete shock, staring at what his mother had done.

Donald turned red as a tomato and even started crying.
Oh, now I believe in karma.
