Chapter 2: The Name I Didn't Know

Every passenger on that plane went completely still.
I stopped breathing.
Luca's voice came through the speakers again, slower now, like each word was costing him something.
"This person means more to me than they probably know.
And I owe them the truth.
I should have said this a long time ago."
Leo looked up at me.
"Mom?
Why does Dad sound like that?"
I didn't answer.
I couldn't.
My hands had gone cold.
Because the way Luca was speaking — it wasn't the voice of a man about to surprise his family.
It was the voice of a man confessing something.
"I've been carrying this for months," Luca continued.
"And I can't keep pretending everything is fine."
The woman sitting across the aisle glanced over at me.
I realized my face must have said everything I was trying to hide.
Leo tugged my sleeve.
"Mom.
Is Dad okay?"
Then Luca said a name.
Not mine.
A name I had never heard before.
The recording was still running in my hand.
My phone screen blurred.
I couldn't tell if it was my eyes or my hands shaking.
Leo whispered, "Who's that?"
