Chapter 1: The Boy Who Danced His Way Out the Door

My husband kicked our son out of the house for being a belly dancer — one year later, he came back with one move that wiped the smile right off his father's face.
Frank had always dreamed of having a son who hunted, watched football, and, as he liked to say, "acted like a man."
But what our son really loved was dance.
And he was breathtaking at it.
The control, the rhythm, the discipline.
I was proud of him.
Frank was disgusted.
More than anything, Ethan wanted to get a job as a Middle Eastern dancer with a famous dance company.
Two weeks after he turned eighteen, he ran into the kitchen holding his phone, practically glowing.
"Mom, I got it!
They offered me the job.
I'll get to travel all over the world!"
I screamed and hugged him.
"YOU DID IT!"
Frank slammed his palm down on the table with a deafening bang.
"You're actually going?"
Ethan swallowed.
"Yes."
Frank gave a cold little laugh.
"So this is it?
This is what my only son is going to become?
Some grown man dancing around in costumes while people stare at him?"
"Dad—"
"No.
Don't 'Dad' me.
Do you have any idea how humiliating it is to tell people what my son does?"
"Frank!" I shouted.
But he stood up and pointed toward the front door.
"If this is the life you're choosing, then choose it somewhere else.
I spent eighteen years trying to raise a son I could be proud of, and somehow, I ended up with THIS."
Ethan went completely still.
I will never forget the look on his face.
Ethan packed one suitcase while I stood in his doorway crying and begging him not to go.
He kissed my forehead.
"I love you, Mom.
But I won't stay somewhere I'm treated like something shameful."
After the door slammed, I turned on Frank.
"You just threw away your only child."
Frank scoffed.
"He'll come crawling back when this ridiculous fantasy blows up in his face.
And when he does, maybe he'll finally be ready to act like a man."
Ethan didn't come back.
No calls.
No replies.
Nothing.
For an entire year, every unknown number made my heart jump.
Then one rainy evening, the doorbell rang.
Ethan stood there in a long coat with a large suitcase beside him.
Frank stepped into the hallway and froze.
Ethan looked straight at him and smiled.
"Hi, Dad.
I'm still doing my ridiculous dancing.
But now I'm ready to show you what you've been hiding all these years."
Frank's jaw tightened.
Ethan opened the suitcase, reached inside, and tossed something at his father.
The moment I saw what it was, I froze.
It turned out there was a lot I didn't know about my husband.
Frank's face slowly turned crimson.
"What the hell is this?" he whispered.
"How did you find it?"
