Chapter 1: The Man Who Stopped Seeing Me

My husband kept saying menopause had made me "too old to be attractive anymore" — the following day, he came home and stopped cold the moment he stepped inside.

I'm fifty-three, and aging has been a sensitive subject for me lately.

I know it's something every woman eventually faces, but that doesn't make watching your body change any easier.

I'd been trying to accept those changes without letting them define how I felt about myself.

Unfortunately, my husband, Barrett, made that almost impossible.

We've been married for twenty-seven years, but over the past year, he'd become increasingly critical of my appearance.

He'd point out my wrinkles, comment on my weight, or make remarks about how different I looked now.

Every time, his words chipped away at the confidence I was already struggling to hold onto.

After I started going through menopause, it only got worse.

One evening, while I was getting ready for dinner with friends, Barrett looked me up and down.

"Why are you trying so hard?"

"What does that mean?"

He shrugged.

"You're going through menopause.

You're too old to be attractive anymore.

Just accept it."

His words hit exactly where he knew I was most vulnerable.

I finished getting ready, but for the rest of the evening, I couldn't stop thinking about how long I'd allowed my own husband to make me feel ashamed of growing older.

The next morning, after Barrett left for work, I made a decision.

By the time he came home, I'd put my plan into action.

I heard Barrett unlock the front door.

He walked inside, took a few steps, and suddenly stopped cold at what he saw.
