Chapter 2: The Other Half of the Sun

Julian froze.

Every person in the ballroom turned to look.

Richard Kensington — the most powerful man in the room — was staring at Julian with an expression no one had ever seen on his face before.

Not anger.

Something older than anger.

Julian slowly released Elena's arm and laughed nervously.

"Sir, I was just—"

"I said take your hands off her."

The silence was absolute.

Richard stepped forward and looked at Elena with eyes that were filling with something she couldn't name.

His voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"Where did you get that necklace?"

Elena touched it instinctively.

"It was given to me.

By the woman who raised me."

"Her name," Richard said.

"What was her name?"

"Rosa.

Rosa Bennett."

Richard closed his eyes.

Beside him, Eleanor made a sound like a quiet sob and reached for her brother's arm to steady herself.

Julian looked between them, confused and increasingly pale.

Then Richard reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out something small.

A photograph.

Old.

Worn at the edges.

He held it up with a trembling hand.

It showed a young woman wearing the other half of Elena's necklace.

"That woman," Richard said quietly, "was my daughter."

The room erupted.

Julian's face went completely white.
