Chapter 2: The Note He Told Her to Deliver

Travis was sitting in the chair across from the principal.
He wasn't handcuffed.
He wasn't angry.
He was just…
sitting there, completely still, with Emma asleep against his arm.
The principal stood up.
"Mrs.
Bennett.
Thank you for coming so quickly."
I looked at Travis.
He met my eyes but didn't say a word.
"What happened?" I asked.
The teacher stepped forward.
"A parent saw Travis outside the school gate yesterday.
She didn't recognize him.
She called the non-emergency line and reported a suspicious man near the children."
My chest tightened.
"He was on the approved list," I said.
"He was.
But that's not why I called you."
She placed a folded piece of paper on the desk.
"Emma gave this to her teacher this morning.
She said Travis told her to."
I picked it up.
It was a note.
In Travis's handwriting.
*If anything ever happens to me, make sure her mother sees this first.*
My hands went cold.
"Travis." My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"What does this mean?"
He looked at Emma, still sleeping.
Then he looked at me.
"There's something I should have told you a long time ago," he said quietly.
"About Ryan."
