Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Envelope

**PART 2**
Brenda's mouth opened, then closed.
No words came.
Andrew shifted on his crutches and looked directly at me.
"Mrs.
Laura, I'm sorry to drag you into this.
But you deserve to know what your husband has been doing."
He reached back into the room and pulled out a manila envelope from the bedside table.
His hand was shaking.
"I found these in Brenda's bag the night she left.
She didn't know I'd seen them."
Inside were bank statements.
Not mine.
Not Mark's personal account.
A separate account — one I had never seen — opened eighteen months ago under the name of Crestview Developments…
but with only one authorized signature.
Brenda's.
My chest went cold.
"That's our company account," I said quietly.
"I'm still a co-owner.
How does she have signing authority?"
Brenda finally found her voice.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
"Then explain it," Andrew said.
"Explain all of it."
She said nothing.
I flipped to the last page.
Over four hundred thousand dollars had moved out of that account in eleven months.
The destination was a property holding company I didn't recognize.
Then I saw the registered director's name.
Ofelia.
Mark's mother.
My hands stopped moving.
Everything Mark had said over the past year — *rest, let me handle things, you've worked hard enough* — suddenly sounded completely different.
I looked up at Brenda.
Her eyes were fixed on the floor.
"How long has Mark been planning this?"
She didn't answer.
But her silence told me everything.
Then my phone rang.
It was Mark.

What Laura found out when she answered that call changed everything she thought she knew about her own life.
