Chapter 2: What Was Never His Name

Two officers stepped inside.

Marcus moved toward them immediately, voice smooth, already performing.

"Officers, my wife is upset.

She overreacted to a small argument.

There's nothing here that—"

"Sir." The taller officer held up a hand.

"We'd like to hear from her first."

Marcus's mother stood up from the table.

"This is a private family matter.

You have no right to—"

"Ma'am.

Please sit down."

She sat.

First time I had ever seen her do what someone else told her.

I gave them the folder I had kept in my car for three months.

Photographs.

Dated records.

Screenshots of messages Marcus thought he had deleted the night he sent them.

The officer flipped through the first few pages and went quiet.

Marcus watched his face.

"Rachel.

Whatever you think you have—"

"The camera recorded everything," I said.

"Tonight included."

His mother's head turned slowly toward the cabinet.

Then toward Marcus.

"What is she talking about?" Her voice had changed.

"Marcus.

What did you do?"

He didn't answer her.

That was when I opened the second folder.

The one with his name on the property deed.

Except it wasn't his name.

It had never been his name.

She looked down at the document.

Then up at her son.

"Marcus—"

"Don't," he said quietly.

But it was already too late.
