Chapter 2: The Name He Should Never Have Said

Part 2 ⬇️
Two officers stepped inside.
Marcus straightened up immediately, switching on that calm, reasonable voice I had heard him use a hundred times before.
"Officers, I'm glad you're here.
My wife is having some kind of episode.
She's been under a lot of stress."
His mother nodded along, clutching her pearls.
"He's right.
She's not well.
We were simply having a family dinner."
I didn't raise my voice.
I just held up my phone and pressed play.
The security footage was clear.
The dining room.
The table.
Marcus standing over me.
The sl*p.
His mother lifting her glass and laughing.
No one spoke.
Then one of the officers looked at Marcus.
"Sir, we're going to need you to step outside."
Marcus's face went a color I had never seen before.
His mother grabbed my arm.
"You have no idea what you've just done.
That footage proves nothing.
This is still my son's home and I will have you removed—"
"Actually," I said quietly, "it isn't."
I opened the folder on my phone and handed it to the second officer.
The deed to the condo.
In my name.
Only my name.
Marcus had signed it over three years ago to protect it from a business debt he never told his mother about.
She didn't know.
She had never known.
The room went completely silent.
Then Marcus said one word.
A name.
Not mine.
And that was when everything changed.
