Chapter 2: The Account He Wasn't Supposed to Know About

Ryan stepped in front of the door and spread his arms wide.

"You're not going anywhere, Claire."

My attorney didn't flinch.

She looked directly at him and said, "Mr.

Mercer, I strongly advise you to step aside."

Ryan laughed — the same laugh he always used when he thought he had won.

"She's my wife.

This is my home.

You have no right to be here."

"Actually," she said, and opened the folder, "we have every right."

Ryan's eyes dropped to the first page.

His face changed.

The advocate gently touched my arm.

"Claire.

Stay close to me."

Ryan looked back up.

His voice dropped low — the dangerous kind of low I knew too well.

"You think a few papers are going to stop me?

You don't know what I'm capable of."

That was when my attorney nodded once toward the hallway.

I hadn't noticed the two people standing just outside the doorway.

One was a police officer.

The other was a woman I didn't recognize — holding a phone, screen facing outward.

Ryan saw them too.

His arms slowly dropped.

But then he said something none of us expected.

He looked straight at me and said, "Claire…

did you really think I didn't know about the account?"

My stomach dropped.

What did he know?

And for how long?
