Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Part 2 ⬇️
My friend held the phone up slowly.
Everyone in the room could see it.
My husband's sister pushed off the counter.
"That's not hers.
She gave it to me to charge."
"She gave it to you," my friend repeated.
"Yes."
"While she was locked in the bathroom."
No one answered that.
My friend turned the screen toward me.
I looked down.
Seventeen missed calls.
Three were from a number I didn't recognize.
The rest were from my mother.
My mother had been trying to reach me since five in the morning.
My husband moved toward me.
"Give her the phone and everyone calm down.
This is a family matter."
"This stopped being a family matter," my friend said quietly, "the moment I saw her face."
My mother-in-law set the napkins down on the table.
Her voice dropped.
"You don't know what goes on in this house."
"I know enough."
My husband stepped closer.
"You need to leave."
My friend didn't move.
One of the other guests, a man I had only met twice, stood up from his chair.
That surprised everyone, including me.
He looked at my husband.
Then he looked at my wrists.
Then he took out his own phone.
My husband's face changed.
"Who are you calling?"
The man didn't answer.
My mother-in-law grabbed my arm from behind.
"Get back in the room.
Now."
That's when my phone lit up again.
The name on the screen made my husband go completely still.
