Chapter 2: The Envelope

Amara didn't slam the suitcase shut.
She closed it slowly, quietly, the way a woman closes a door she knows she will never open again.
Downstairs, she could hear Dante's voice.
Low.
Calm.
Already talking to Selena like Amara had already left.
She stood at the top of the stairs for one moment.
Then she reached into her coat pocket and checked the envelope.
Still there.
Inside was not a letter.
Not a goodbye note.
It was a document.
Twelve pages.
Prepared three weeks ago by a lawyer Dante had never met, in an office Dante's people had never visited, paid for with money from an account Dante didn't know existed.
Amara had been careful.
She walked downstairs.
Dante looked up from the kitchen.
"You're actually leaving."
"I am."
Something shifted in his face.
Not guilt.
Surprise.
"Amara—"
"Don't." Her voice was steady.
"You made your choice.
I'm making mine."
Selena said nothing.
But her eyes moved to the envelope in Amara's hand.
Dante noticed.
"What is that?"
Amara looked at him one last time.
"Something you should have thought about before tonight."
She walked to the front door.
Behind her, she heard Dante take one step forward.
Then his phone rang.
She heard him answer it.
Then silence.
Then, very quietly, she heard him say a name she had never heard before.
And she realized — she wasn't the only one who had been watching him.
---
What Amara had inside that envelope — and who was on that phone call — changes everything.
