"I'm canceling the card," Ethan said.
The words landed like a stone dropping into still water.
Lauren stared at him.
"You can't be serious."
"I heard what you said in your apartment, Lauren.
Both of us did."
One of the bridesmaids looked at the ground.
The other one suddenly found something very interesting in her drink.
Lauren's voice dropped.
"Ethan, this is my bachelorette.
You're embarrassing me in front of everyone."
"You embarrassed my wife in front of everyone.
You just did it where you thought she couldn't hear."
Lauren's jaw tightened.
She looked at me — not with guilt.
With something sharper than that.
"She's always been too sensitive.
I was joking."
Ethan didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
"You changed the entire event so she'd feel too ashamed to show up.
That's not a joke.
That's a plan."
The cabana went quiet.
Then Lauren said something none of us expected.
She looked straight at me and said, "You know what?
He only married you because he felt sorry for you.
He told me that himself."
My whole body went still.
