Chapter 2: What He Put in the Warm Milk

Hidden beneath the pier, soaking and shaking, I stared at my brother.
"What did Garrett put in my body, Tobias?"
He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small waterproof case.
Inside was a folded document — a medical report with my name printed at the top.
"I intercepted this from his private email six weeks ago," Tobias said.
"He's been adding something to your warm milk every night.
A compound that causes gradual liver damage.
Slow enough that it looks natural.
Fast enough that within another few months, you wouldn't have survived long enough to question it."
The ground felt like it disappeared beneath me.
"He was already preparing for your death before today," Tobias said quietly.
"The river was only the backup plan."
I couldn't speak.
Three years of warm milk.
Three years of him standing in the kitchen, smiling, handing me that cup.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Tobias looked away.
"Because I didn't know about Penelope until last week."
He paused.
"Rosalind…
she's not just pregnant.
The baby is registered as the legal heir to the shipyard.
Garrett filed the paperwork two months ago.
If you had d!ed today, everything would have transferred automatically."
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen and went completely still.
"What is it?" I whispered.
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.
*She's still alive.
I saw them under the pier.
What do you want me to do?*
Someone on that shore was already reporting back to Garrett.

What Rosalind discovered next — and who sent that message — will change everything.
