Chapter 2: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Grant didn't leave the lobby.
He followed me to the elevator, his mistress two steps behind him, her heels clicking fast against the marble.
"Mara.
Stop."
I didn't stop.
"You don't understand what you've just done," he said.
"That file — you were never supposed to open that file."
I turned around slowly.
"Then you should have married someone who didn't have the access code."
His mistress grabbed his arm.
"Grant.
We need to call Richard.
Now."
That name stopped me cold.
Richard.
My father's oldest attorney.
The man who had drafted every Kingsley trust document for thirty years.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
Grant saw my face change.
"That's right," he said quietly.
"Richard has been advising us for two years.
He knows exactly what Ellie is worth.
And he knows exactly what you're worth without her."
Ellie stirred against my shoulder.
I held her tighter.
"You brought Richard into this," I said.
"You used my father's own lawyer against my daughter."
Grant didn't deny it.
He just looked at me with something I had never seen in his eyes before.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
"You made your move, Mara," he said.
"Now we make ours."
His phone was already at his ear.
