Chapter 2: Something Else Dr. Lawson Found

Part 2 ⬇️
I dropped the phone face-down so Maya couldn't see the screen.
But she already had.
Her whole body went rigid.
She grabbed my sleeve with both hands and whispered, "Don't tell him where we are.
Please, Mom."
Dr.
Lawson watched her reaction.
He didn't say a word.
He didn't need to.
The social worker arrived two minutes later.
Her name was Carol.
She had kind eyes and a calm voice, but the notepad in her hand felt like a verdict.
"Maya," Carol said gently, "can you tell me how you got that bruise on your shoulder?"
Maya looked at me.
Then she looked at the door.
"He said if I ever told anyone," she whispered, "he'd say I was lying.
That I was crazy.
That I made everything up."
My stomach dropped.
"Who said that, sweetheart?" Carol asked.
Maya's lips barely moved.
"He's been saying it for two years."
The room tilted.
Two years.
My daughter had been carrying this for two years while I stood in the same house, made dinner, said goodnight.
My phone buzzed again.
Then again.
Then again.
Carol looked at me.
"Mrs.
Hale, I need you to step into the hallway with me for a moment."
She lowered her voice.
"There's something else Dr.
Lawson found that we need to discuss privately."
