Chapter 3: What He Was Protecting Me From

I looked at my lawyer.

"What do you mean, protecting me from something?"

"I think you need to hear this from Nathan directly." He glanced toward the far end of the hallway.

"I'll give you ten minutes."

He walked away before I could argue.

Nathan was still standing where I'd last seen him.

He hadn't moved.

His hands were at his sides.

His jacket was slightly wrinkled, like he'd been sitting in it for hours before I arrived.

I walked toward him.

He watched every step.

When I stopped in front of him, neither of us spoke for a moment.

"Your lawyer told you," he said finally.

"He told me enough."

Nathan nodded slowly.

He looked down at the floor, then back up at me.

"Her name is Claire.

She's thirty-one.

She was adopted by a family in Ohio when she was four, and she spent the last three years trying to find where she came from."

"Why didn't you tell me any of this?"

"Because I found out the same week you lost the baby."

The hallway went quiet around me.

Two years ago.

The pregnancy we had tried for.

The one that ended at eleven weeks, quietly, in a hospital room with pale green walls.

I had spent six months after that barely getting out of bed.

Nathan had been there every morning.

Every night.

"I didn't want to add anything to what you were already carrying," he said.

"Claire understood.

She agreed to wait."

"You made that decision for me."

"I know."

"You let me believe—" My voice caught.

"For an entire year, Nathan.

You let me believe things were fine."

"Things were fine.

Between us, everything was fine."

"Except you were keeping a secret."

"I was trying to protect you."

"That's not your call to make."

He didn't argue.

He pressed his lips together and looked at me steadily.

"You're right," he said.

"It wasn't."

I wanted to stay angry.

I had been angry for months.

I had built something solid out of that anger — a lawyer, a plan, a version of the story where I knew exactly who had wronged me and how.

"What else?" I said.

"Your lawyer said she brought something else.

Something about our marriage."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"That part isn't about me."

"Then who is it about?"

He looked past me, down the hallway.

I turned.

My mother-in-law, Diane, was standing thirty feet away.

She had just come through the courthouse doors.

She hadn't seen me yet.

But Claire was beside her.

And Claire was not smiling.
