Chapter 2: Someone Made That Call

Part 2 ⬇️
When Adam finally called that evening, I didn't cry.
I was past crying.
"Marina, I'm so sorry.
My phone was on silent during the meetings.
How are you feeling?"
I looked down at Nell sleeping against my chest.
My fever had broken two hours earlier.
Bernice had handled everything.
"Better," I said.
"Bernice took care of it."
A pause.
Then: "Good.
That's what she's there for."
That sentence landed somewhere deep and didn't move.
I asked him quietly, "Was Savannah at those meetings too?"
"Marina—"
"Just answer me, Adam."
He sighed.
"She's on the same project.
You know that."
"I know a lot of things now."
He went very quiet.
Then he said something I wasn't expecting.
"When I get home, we need to talk about what you've been telling people."
"What people?"
"My mother called me.
She said you've been saying things."
I hadn't spoken to his mother once since Nell was born.
Not once.
Someone had called her.
And it wasn't me.
