Chapter 2: The Girl in the Hospital Gown

The door burst open before anyone could stop it.

A young woman stumbled in — maybe twenty-two, twenty-three — still in a hospital gown, one hand pressed against her side.

She looked straight at me.

"Please.

Don't let them take her."

The security officers moved toward her.

The doctor raised his hand.

"Ma'am, you need to go back to your room—"

"She's my mother." The girl's voice cracked.

"I know how that sounds.

But she's my mother and I need her to know what happened."

The room went silent.

I couldn't breathe.

"I don't know you," I said.

Tears were running down her face.

"You wouldn't.

They made sure of that."

She looked at Michael.

And Michael looked at the floor.

"They?" I turned to my husband.

"Michael.

What does she mean?"

He still wouldn't look at me.

The young woman took one shaking step forward.

"Twenty-two years ago, a clinic made a mistake.

Or at least — that's what they called it."

She reached into the pocket of her gown and held out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in my mother's things after she p@ssed.

It has your name on it.

Your real name."

My hands were trembling as I reached for it.

The truth is more shocking than anyone in that room expected.
