David opened his mouth, but Emily didn't wait.
"Dad.
Where.
Is.
Mom's.
Card."
It wasn't a question anymore.
Her voice was low and steady, the way it gets when she has already decided something.
David glanced at Melissa, then back at Emily.
"Sweetheart, I just thought—"
"You thought what?" Emily set Melissa's card face-down on the table.
"That I wouldn't notice?
That Mom wouldn't notice?"
Melissa reached for her champagne glass.
"Emily, I know this feels—"
"Please don't." Emily looked at her once, then looked away.
Done.
I hadn't moved.
I was still standing there holding the back of that chair, the one David had pointed to, the one between strangers.
My hands had gone cold.
Then Emily did something I didn't expect.
She walked to the family table, lifted the empty chair beside her own seat, and carried it around to where I was standing.
She set it down firmly at the corner of the family table, right between herself and her new husband.
"This is where my mother sits," she said.
"At my wedding.
At our table."
David's jaw tightened.
"Emily, you're making a scene."
"No, Dad." She pulled out the chair and looked at me.
"You did that.
I'm just fixing it."
The room had gone quiet around us.
I sat down.
And that's when I noticed Melissa's hand trembling slightly as she reached into her bag — and pulled out an envelope I had never seen before.
---
What was in that envelope — and why did Melissa bring it to Emily's wedding?
May you like
What David did next made everyone at that table go silent.
