Chapter 1: The Woman He Left at Home

My husband brought his mistress to his company party as his plus-one because I "embarrassed him" — instead of making a scene, I did something much better to teach him a lesson.

Six months ago, I gave birth to twin boys by emergency C-section.

I gained weight, and after complications, my doctor warned me not to diet or do intense exercise until I healed.

At first, my husband, Grant, kissed my scar and said,

"You gave me two sons.

I could never look at you differently."

Then came his company gala.

I was trying on a dress when Grant looked me over and sighed.

"I don't want you to come this year."

I actually laughed because I thought he was joking.

He wasn't.

"People at work notice everything," he said.

"It's a big night for me, and appearances matter.

Everyone would look at you and wonder why you let yourself go."

He gestured at my body with a disgusted look.

"You embarrass me."

Something inside me went completely still.

Then, as if he hadn't already humiliated me enough, Grant explained that he had hired an actress to attend the gala as his plus-one.

"Accept that you're not the most beautiful woman in the world, and deal with the fact that I want to make the best possible impression."

I was completely stunned.

But I smiled and nodded.

The moment he stepped out of the room, I called my friend Nora, who worked at the same company.

At first, she thought I was joking.

Then she went very quiet.

"Claire…

Grant hasn't just been telling people you're staying home."

My stomach dropped.

"What has he been saying?"

"That you two are basically separated.

And that he's bringing the woman he's been seeing."

I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

"Can you get me an invitation?"

Nora didn't even hesitate.

"Oh, absolutely."

Now I understood the sudden change in Grant's behavior — and why he had started coming home so late so often.

The plan came to me almost instantly.

Instead of making a scene, I was going to teach Grant a much better lesson — one he would remember for the rest of his life.

On the night of the gala, Grant completely ignored me.

I waited until his car disappeared.

Then I put on my most beautiful dress, styled my hair, and did my makeup.

I looked better than I ever had before.

When I walked into the party, conversations stopped.

Grant stood by the bar with a stunning blonde on his arm.

His champagne glass froze halfway to his mouth.

"Sweetheart," I said brightly.

"You forgot one thing.

But don't worry, I brought it."

With that, my plan went into motion.

What did Claire bring — and what is Grant about to lose in front of everyone?
