Chapter 2: The Envelope He Left Behind

The doctor held out a sealed envelope.
My name was written on the front in Mark's handwriting.
My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold it.
"He asked me to make sure you were alone when you opened it," the doctor said quietly.
"He was very insistent about that."
I looked around the empty hallway.
My sister had stepped outside.
The nurses had moved on.
I was alone.
I tore it open.
Inside was a single folded letter — and underneath it, a photograph I had never seen before.
A little girl.
Maybe four or five years old.
Dark eyes.
Mark's smile.
My legs nearly gave out.
"Who is this?" I whispered.
The doctor looked at the floor.
"He said you would ask that.
He said to tell you…
he tried to tell you himself.
Many times.
But he ran out of time."
I stared at the photograph.
At that smile I knew better than my own reflection.
"How long did you know?"
He didn't answer.
That silence told me everything.
My daughter kicked hard inside me — as if she already knew her father had left behind a secret that was about to change both our lives forever.

What Mark had been hiding wasn't just a letter.
