Chapter 2: The Second Page

Standing in our doorway was the last person Sean ever expected to see.
His brother, Daniel.
Not as a visitor.
Not as a surprise.
Daniel was dressed in a jacket, holding flowers, and smiling at me like a man who had been waiting a long time for this moment.
"You called *him*?" Sean's voice cracked.
"You said I could date whoever I want," I said quietly.
"Whenever I want."
Sean turned to his brother.
"You knew about this?"
Daniel didn't flinch.
"She called me three days ago.
I said yes."
The color drained from Sean's face all over again.
"She's my *wife*."
"She was," Daniel said.
"While you were out every night smelling like someone else's perfume."
Sean stepped forward.
I placed my hand on Daniel's arm — slowly, calmly — and Sean stopped like he'd hit a wall.
"You planned this," Sean said, staring at me.
"This whole thing."
"You gave me permission," I said.
"In writing, actually."
His eyes dropped to the folded paper I pulled from my purse.
The agreement he had signed three weeks ago, so proud of himself, so certain I would never use it.
He hadn't read the second page.
