Chapter 2: Three Things in a Rusted Box

Part 2 ⬇️
The container held three things.
A photograph.
A document.
And a small key with a paper tag that had one word written on it in my mother's handwriting.
*Mine.*
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
The photograph showed Joe.
He looked young — maybe twenty-five.
He was standing beside a woman I didn't recognize, and they were both smiling.
On the back, someone had written a date in pen.
Six months before Joe and I met.
The document was a legal agreement.
I couldn't read all of it — the ink had faded and the paper had gone soft from years in the ground.
But I could make out two signatures at the bottom.
Joe's name.
And my mother's.
They had signed something together.
Before I even existed in his life.
I was still on the porch when headlights swept across the yard.
A car pulled up slowly.
Joe stepped out.
He saw the open container in my hands.
He saw the photograph.
His face went completely still.
"You weren't supposed to find that," he said quietly.
"What did you do, Joe?"
He didn't answer right away.
He looked at the maple.
Then back at me.
"Your mother and I made an agreement a long time ago," he finally said.
"To protect you."
"Protect me from *what?*"
He opened his mouth.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen — and whatever color was left in his face drained away completely.

What Joe said next stopped everything.
