Chapter 1: What the Walls Were Keeping

My husband and I can't have children, so finding 12 ultrasound photos hidden beside our water heater made my bl00d run cold—then he dropped to his knees and said, "I made your mom a promise."

My husband, Michael, and I built our house fourteen years ago believing we'd fill its three bedrooms with children.

We never did.

After years of appointments, procedures, and crushing disappointments, doctors finally told us that having a baby wasn't going to happen for us.

My mom was the person who held me through the worst of it.

She died five years ago, still insisting Michael and I could have a beautiful life even if it looked different from the one we'd planned.

Last Thursday, Michael was away on business when our water heater stopped working.

While checking the utility closet, I removed a narrow access panel beside it, hoping to find the shutoff valve.

Instead, something slid out and landed at my feet.

A thick white envelope.

Inside were twelve ultrasound photographs.

For several seconds, I simply stared.

They showed different stages of pregnancy, with dates spanning almost four years.

Some had handwritten numbers on the backs.

One had a tiny heart drawn in the corner.

None were mine.

I'd never been pregnant.

And because Michael and I had built this house ourselves, they couldn't belong to a previous owner.

By the time he came home Friday night, all twelve photographs were spread across our kitchen table.

Michael walked in smiling.

Then he saw them.

His suitcase slipped from his hand.

"Whose babies are these?" I asked.

He went completely still.

"Please let me explain."

"Twelve ultrasounds, Michael.

Hidden inside our house.

How long have you been lying to me?"

"No.

It's not what you think."

"Then tell me what this means!"

Instead of answering, my husband suddenly dropped to his knees.

I'd never seen him look so terrified.

His eyes filled with tears as he reached for the oldest ultrasound.

"You don't know one thing about me," he whispered.

"What are you talking about?"

He looked down at the photograph.

"Before your mom died, I made her one promise."

My bl00d ran cold.

"What promise?"

He covered his face for several seconds before looking back at me.

"I promised I'd never tell you.

But I can't keep that promise anymore."

"Tell me what, Michael?"

He looked at the twelve ultrasound photos scattered between us.

"The truth is...

your mom and I—"

His voice broke.

Then my husband buried his face in his hands and burst into tears.
